Depending on what you want from your hoverboard – speed, resistance, smart design, high-end batteries – the prices alternate naturally, so we selected some models that translate very well what you can find in the industry right now for different budgets and demands.
Before we get to the products, let’s take a brief look though on some important features and details about the hoverboards that are important to know when you are going to purchase a model. as well as how we did the selection and how our quality filter works to pick the products reviewed here.
Is Not Always What it Seems: What is Hoverboard in fact ?
Since they showed up in the industry, there has always been a certain confusion on what hoverboards are because, they came out after – and following – a design that sourced the development of the hoverboards: the so-called segways.
For a long while, the segways have been commercialized and got quite popular in America, they were even subject to ridicule due to its funny and weird mechanics. These days they are not as popular as they used to be. During the early ’00s, the mockery was mostly defined in popular culture by the clumsy character Gob in the cult TV show Arrested Development, who used to drive it around purposeless. But the faulty or clumsy logics of segways gave space to the development of a much more reliable and fun to use model.
The hooverboards are, in a nut shell, segways without the driving bar and with a much more light and challenging design. Like a breed between the former and a skateboard, they are in fact much more closer to a sportive device as they require a learned self-balance to keep up over them and activate them for the drive, even though you don’t need to keep that balance for the machine to keep on moving, as the hoverboard has a self-balancing mechanism on its own that will lock the board in a stable position as soon as you start riding.
How a Hoverboard Works?
Once you are over the hoverboard, the battery-propelled device will start running as soon as you tilt the board, with you feet, frontwards. This activates – in most models – the message that the machine is ready to run, and then it starts to gather speed, as well as the wheels lock the board in a steady balance, however, you have to learn how to keep yourself over the board while it is speeding up, as it is not as easy as it sounds. That’s why kids in general or people who know how to ride bicycles and such end up doing better with them.
To slow down, you have to tilt the board backwards, to change directions and drive the machine, you have to turn your feet, slightly, to the direction you wish to turn. You can as well understand the complexities of the hoverboard self-balancing and self-speeding mechanism reading this comprehensive guide on how these machines are crafted and structured.
The golden rule of any hoverboard model though is, it will work as long as there is battery, but the autonomy of the latter depends on how fast you ride and how much you weight, as the machine also must generate force to speed up based on how much weight it is carrying so, basically, you can have many different outputs when it comes to design to propel kids, adults, at certain speeds and for certain terrains.
How we did our research ?
While there are not huge differences in prices for hoverboard models, we got to separate them by the price tag as subtleties of price lead to differences on quality and performance.
Why you should trust us ?
A great hoverboard model is more than a faster or long-lasting machine, it is about safety. Since the concerning episodes where batteries caught on fire or the hoverboards exploded, many models were put on recall and to manufacture and purchase a model these days requires it to meet some essential quality standards.
All models that are allowed to be commercialized by the industry in America must meet the criteria of the UL 2272 certification. The UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is an American renowned company testing and certifying product of all sort with quality certification, as well as safety.
The company has been ahead of the testing and regularization of hoverboards after 2016 under the 2272 certification. This works similarly as the ISO guide, so you can be sure that all products with this quality stamp are safe for you and your kids.
We did not wandered out of this certification, meaning that we did not selected any hoverboard models that are missing this certification, including very famous brands that, despite the success with the public, are still not regulated and can pose a danger risk upon its customers. We advise you as well as to restrict your choices to the UL 2272 stamp, as this certification also ensures with striking precision the autonomy of batteries and how strong and reliable these machines are for the long go.
So How Much do a Hoverboard Cost?
Safety is not something that will make your hoverboard more expensive. If your budget is short, you can find products with a low price tag to meet most demands for light, kids oriented or simpler designs. Increasing the price you can get more fancy design and/or more long lasting products, as well as faster or stronger builds.
We have selected three different models for each budget that can please customers very well under its budget limitations.

Buying Guide: Some Purchase and Use Tips
To finish our guide, we will add some words of advice when you are dealing with hoverboards, either purchasing or riding on it.
Apart from the battery certified products you have to pay attention on, there are other details you have to know before getting more intimate with one these devices.
How to actually ride a hoverboard ?
Well we could write great tips and try to explain you how to actually use and ride a howerboard, but in reality one video will explain you more than thousand words we could write.
So we will give you great video by our friend Adam who will explain segway riding in great detail.
What the best hoverboard must include?
Wheels: You have to pay a lot of attention to wheels and the their material, because hoverboards requires a good support for the ride to be smooth. The ride must be smooth so you can keep balance easily. Wheels that are made on way too rigid/hard rubber do not offer a great experience, and don’t forget each hoverboard model works for a specific weight range and you should stick to these standards to enjoy a longer life span for your device.
Battery Autonomy: Follow likewise the standards for the battery usage. If you are an adult with an average or over weight number, look for hoverboards with heavy duty profiles since their batteries will last either the usual running time for these devices – at least 1 hour – or more, based on the weight they must carry around. It is not that hard to understand the relation here: it is required power to make the engines propel your body over the hoverboard. The more weight, the more energy it requires to speed and move around. Take note that the use of Bluetooth connectivity is something else that will consume the power of the battery and you must be aware about the running time with that use included.
Rugged and Outlined Foot Pads: Is often very tricky how you must position your feet over the hoverboard, and keeping them on like that is as well a challenge when the foot pad is seamless or with not outline for positioning. Prefer the hoverboards that include those indications and a rugged texture. This will help you to know where and how to place your feet aligned over the board and maintain them there steady still.
Where to Buy the Best Hoverboard
Usage Tips: Where you Can Use your Hoverboard?
If you noticed the models we included in our reviews, the last ones were all heavy duty, meaning they have a strong build to cover all terrains. The term all terrain means that these hoverboards are ideal both for the usual smooth surfaces and hard terrains.
For hard terrains we can call grass or rocky fields, where the surface is not smooth and imposes some obstacles for the ride. Only heavy duty hoverboards are ideal for this kind of usage as their wheels and suspension system are resilient and strong enough to keep the hoverboard in balance over those terrains. All other kind of hoverboards are ideal only for paved surfaces, like your regular pavement or asphalt roads.
On the other hand, no hoverboard is fit for soft terrains, like sand walks and deep gravel terrains. The latter is a tricky situation where the wheels can easily handle the gravel but the weight of the hoverboard rider can impose an issue on navigation when the gravel terrain is too deep, meaning it will sink just like it would in sand walks.
Safety Tips: How to Safely Use Your Hoverboard
Like bicycles and skateboards, hoverboards require the rider to find out their own balance over the device and this is something that can be learned within some hours or days depending on the person, but before or after you get there some wise advices are important to make your ride safe and pleasant.
- Calibrate the Hoverboard: while you will learn your balance to ride the hoverboard, the machine has its own balance to keep the wheels and the board aligned and you have to be sure it is appropriately balanced. Before you ride the hoverboard for the first time, is important to recalibrate it as you never know whether it was tested before or not and somehow got out of calibration. All hoverboards have the same default procedure for that. You have to completely turn off the machine, place it in a flat and seamless surface and then press the on button and hold it for 5 to 10 seconds – until all lights of the hoverboard start to flash. From that on, just release the button and let the machine process the recalibration. This process resets the machine, takes some seconds or minutes depending on the model to get finished. When the hoverboard goes silent again, you are ready to turn it on again and start using.
- Correct Positioning: Be sure to position yourself over the hoverboard correctly. That’s why we recommend to purchase models with outlined foot pads. They will indicate exactly where you have to position your feet. Whether your feet is bigger or smaller than the outlined shape, just be sure to position your feet center aligned in relation to the shape.
- Stepping In and Out: You have to “get on board” by the back of the device and leave likewise by the back. Step ahead to get in and step backwards to get out. Do not get out the machine stepping ahead, this is a common mistake that ends up speeding the hoverboard and results in accidents and falls. You can check more on this and other tips in this ABC News informative report.
- Riding Position: Differently than a skateboard, you don’t have to overwork your position while you ride to find balance. A stand still, erect and aligned position is the way to go. Do not curve your back, do not bend your body back or frontwards, all the inclination and directions of the hoverboard are ruled by the positioning of your feet that will spin to indicate when to take a turn left or right. Keep your body straight still.
To finish your safety measures, is always good specially when you are starting to have these essential safety accessories to keep you protected:
- Helmet: A good strong helmet, the same kind you would use to ride a bike, skateboard or roller skates, is a great idea to keep you really safe. The idea when you feel you are about to fall is always to lean backwards as it will cause the less injuries as possible. The helmet though is here to prevent head injuries which can happen doesn’t matter how you fall.
- Kneepads: Once again, in case you cannot fall backwards, safety kneepads are another essential accessories.
- Elbowpads: To finish, don’t forget o a good pair of elbow pads for ultimate protection. They may be as essential as kneepads for beginners.
Kart Enhancement: Do you wanna go creative and use your pair of wheels for other means? There are some cool ways to ride your hoverboard. The mini kart attachments turn them into race kart alike vehicles. Is easier and safer, while they won’t speed as a race kart, the ride will be nice, specially for young kids.
